Nagios Notifications via SMS

Posted in Projects

Due to the possibility of either our exchange server becoming unavailable, or worse yet, something go wrong in the “core” of our network; it was decided that an alternate method of notifications needed to be setup.  SMS was the best option as it would be independent of the network and email.

I chose a tool called Gnokii and paired it with an older T-Mobile Motorola Razr connected to the Ubuntu server with a USB cable.  The first step was installing Gnokii:

sudo apt-get install gnokii

The Hatch is buzzing around the web

Every once and a while I scour the web trying to find mentions of The Hatch, just to see what others might be saying.  Most recently, Dave over at http://www.paflyfish.com gave The Hatch a nice writeup.  Turns out he’s friends with Mr. Carroll who has provided photo’s for the app.  Dave has a great web site that has product reviews and good information covering fly fishing in Pennsylvania.  Living in Oregon, I tend to forget, actually, not even think about fly fishing in other states.  Be sure to check out his site, if I ever make it over to PA I will certainly bring by rod along as it looks like a beautiful place.

You can see his writeup at http://www.paflyfish.com/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=102

Fixing HP’s Credential Manager

Posted in Windows

First of all, I neither support or condone the use of HP’s credential manager.  It’s fine in theory, but the amount of times I’ve had to fix something with it is getting ridiculous.  The latest issue occurred when the user logged into Windows using credential manager, the user had to swipe their finger again to log into credential manager to get the passwords to work.

To fix the issue of having to log into credential manager twice, rather than once, you need to find which part has is corrupt.

 1. Open HP ProtectTools Security Manager
 2. Click ProtectTools in the left hand column and then “Backup and Restore”
 3. Follow the prompts to make a backup of the current identity.
 4. Click “Credential Manager” after the backup is complete and click “My Identity”.  Then click “Clear Identity for this Account”  NOTE: Make sure you have a backup first
 5. Create a new identity.
 6. Log out and log back in to see if credential manager also logs in.  If it does, continue on.
 7. You can then restore the backup from the same spot you backed it up.  At the last window where you can pick which parts to restore.  Restore the SSO piece and it will most likely fail again.
 8. Now the fun part comes in finding which application entry in SSO is causing it to break.  In my case, after removing the ActiveSync entry and another one it worked.  Do step 6 after each entry removal to find when it starts working again.  I started by looking for entry’s that were applications other than web pages.

Or, you can just go to add remove programs and remove credential manager.

Fixing Microsoft’s Remote Assistance…

Posted in Windows

0

So a few posts ago I described how to setup the “Offer Remote Assistance” feature for a domain.  It’s been working just fine, until yesterday.  When trying to connect to a specific computer in our network a “Message: You do not have access to logon to this session” message would pop up.  It was usually followed by an EventID: 5270 in the event logs.

After much searching and trying various stabs at the solution, one was finally found.  For some reason, still unknown to me, one single registry entry was different that broke Remote Assistance on the computer.  On the computer that isn’t working, check out HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControl Set\Control\Terminal Server\fInHelpMode On the broke computer, it was set to 1, where working computers was set to 0.

I first tried just setting the entry to 0, but it still didn’t work, so I removed the key and restarted the machine.  Working.

If your seeing this issue, hopefully this post will solve it quick.

The “Pork Explosion”, Traeger style

Posted in Cooking

So for a going away surprise, a couple of us guys at work decided to make the famed Bacon Explosion, but with pulled pork inside rather than the bacon.  Jesse smoked up some pork tenderloin for 6 hours on his grill and brought it on over.

First the weave, about 1.5 pounds of bacon per explosion, coated in Jesse’s secret rub:

Next, 2 pounds of pork sausage is spread over the bacon and filled with the pulled pork, BBQ sauce, and more rub.  One explosion was made with breakfast sausage, the other with maple sausage.

The bacon is then wrapped around the roll of sausage:

They were placed on the grill, smoked for 5 hours at around 225 degree’s with maple pellets, the outcome?

These things were awesome, and a huge hit the next day at the office.  Some were scared to try it, but I think they were pleasantly surprised at the flavor and all around goodness of the explosion.

I’ve added a new page to the blog that shows a running list of the rivers included in The Hatch.  This list is growing, and as you can see from the ones colored in red, many more are coming!

As I add rivers I will continue to add them to the list.  You can see the page at http://www.corypratt.com/?page_id=198

The Hatch 2.0.1 and whats coming next…

2.0.1

The update that was just released yesteday was a small update.  There was a strange issue with the App Store and the versioning, it showed version 1.1.2, while the actual app version was 2.0; so I pushed an update to 2.0.1 to get the numbering correct.  I added a couple more rivers and two more bugs to the database.

Whats next:

I’m working on gathering info for rivers in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Tennessee and a few other East Coast states for the next update.

I am also working on gathering some more photo’s for the flies, as that is a huge request right now.  If any users out there would like to see their photo’s of bugs in The Hatch please contact me or post a comment!
